Cardiac Lab Testing

  • 24 Hour Monitoring
  • 24 Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram (DSE)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Exercise Stress Testing
  • Stress-Echocardiogram
  • 24hr Monitoring of the heart’s rhythm. A small device is attached to the patient via ECG and leads to the patient and the electrical pulses are recorded on it. The patient goes home with the monitor and returns the next day to remove it.
  • The cardiologist then interprets the ECGs and a report is produced
  • This is the measurement of blood pressure over a 24hr period. A blood pressure cuff and a small monitor are connected to the patient and he/she is able to perform their regular daily activity
  • This test has no restrictions
  • Every 30-40 min, the patient feels the cuff inflate and the blood pressure is measured and stored on the monitor
  • The patient returns the following day to have the monitor removed and the results are available at that visit
  • This is a diagnostic procedure that may be used when a doctor wants to assess the heart muscle under stress
  • If exercise on a treadmill is not an option due to the person’s medical condition, a doctor may use an intravenous medicine called Dobutamine.
  • Dobutamine causes the heart to beat faster and will mimic the effects of exercise on the heart.
  • This test takes about 1 1/2hrs, done by a cardiologist and trained staff. The Cardiologist then interprets the DSE and a report is produced.
  • This test is painless ultrasound and evaluates the heart’s walls, valves and blood flow through the heart.
  • It is frequently used for evaluating heart sounds, as an enlarged heart, unexplained chest pain, palpitations or strokes. It is also used for following the status of artificial heart valves.
  • This test takes about 30-40min and is interpreted by a cardiologist.
  • This test aids in the diagnosis of coronary artery diseases in patients with cardiac risk factors and prognosis of recent heart attacks.
  • It lasts approximately 30min and the patient is asked to walk on a treadmill under the supervision of trained staff.
  • The electrical impulses of the heart and blood pressure are monitored during exercise.
  • Patients are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes for exercise.
  • This is a combination of 2 echocardiograms and a stress test. The first echo is done before the patient does the treadmill stress test and the heart is evaluated at rest. A peak exercise, another echo is done to the evaluate how the heart responds to exercise.
  • Patients are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes for the exercise stress part of the test.
